Episode 27: Dr. Leighna Harrison

Dr. Leighna Harrison is a womanist, Black feminist, critically conscious, clinical liberation psychologist. Also a licensed practitioner, she recently completed a 7-year career providing individual and group therapy to veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs. She now offers consultation and training to groups, organizations, and corporations, in the areas of anti-racism, anti-oppression, and liberation. Dr. Harrison also maintains a private practice for women of color in tech in Silicon Valley, and serves as faculty in the Stanford Graduate School of Business’s Women in Management program.

Her specialty areas include anxiety, depression, substance use, mind-body integration, women’s health & wellness, sexuality & intimate relationships, professional development, and equity, diversity, intersectionality & inclusion. Leighna is a trilingual therapist (English/Spanish/Portuguese) whose employment experiences range from VA medical centers and county-based hospital systems to community mental health centers, mobile clinics for migrant and indigent populations, and private psychotherapy foundations.

Leighna has conducted research related to mindfulness, race-related stress, social justice, and self-harm behaviors at Stanford University, Palo Alto University, and the American Psychological Association (APA); her research findings have been published in peer-reviewed journals, with presentations at conferences nationally and internationally. She served as an elected member to the graduate student board of the APA, in the role of member-at-large for diversity and inclusion. She currently holds membership in the APA, the California Psychological Association, the National Latino Psychological Association, and the Association of Black Psychologists.

Dr. Harrison earned her Bachelor’s Degree cum laude in Culture Studies from UCLA, and her Master’s and Doctoral Degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology at Palo Alto University, with an academic emphasis in Diversity and Community Mental Health. She completed her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship in Women’s Health at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
